Packing up belongings is a necessary task when deciding to move. Packing can be messy, confusing, and could end up costing more money when not done correctly. Luckily, we have great packing tips to help you avoid potential issues!
Start Packing Early
Packing early is a crucial step. The packing process can sometimes take much longer than anticipated, especially for larger homes or businesses. Starting earlier than later can help you avoid the unforeseen problems that may arise, and help you be ready for the big moving day.
Ensure you Have all the Necessary Supplies
Packing up belongings requires the right supplies. Common supplies used for packing are:
- Packing Tape
- Bubble/Plastic Wrap
- Styrofoam (If you want to get fancy)
Locating all the necessary supplies can sometimes be a pain. We suggest checking in with your local moving companies to see if they have the necessary packing supplies for sale!
Pack Rarely Used Items First
We do not suggest packing your important items just yet. You might need those over the course of the packing process!
Instead, make sure to first pack belongings that are unimportant to maintain your day-to-day life. That way, you don’t have to sift through belongings you’ve already packed just to find your daily necessities!
When it is time to pack these belongings, make sure to consider them for an essentials “day one” box. This will be explained in greater detail later in this article.
There’s No Such Thing as Too Much Wrapping
It’s okay to be overprotective of your belongings. Especially when it comes to easily breakable or high value items!
Go ahead and wrap your belongings to your heart’s content. The most important part of moving is making sure all your belongings make it to your new home or business safe and sound.
Label and Organize Boxes
Organizing and labelling your belongings can be an excellent way to help your move go smoothly. Make sure to label any fragile materials, which direction on the box should be facing up, and a general idea of what is in the box to help you unpack later.
If you want to be really proactive, you can even label the boxes according to what room you want them to end up in. This way, you can streamline the process of unpacking all your belongings.
Day One Box – The Essentials
When you complete the moving process and begin unpacking, you’ll realize that some items will be important to unpack first. Some common items include:
- Prescription Medications
- Hygiene Products
One way to avoid the hassle of searching through numerous boxes for these items is to make a Day 1 kit. Pack all the essentials you will need on your first night at your new dwelling, and unpack them when you arrive. You’ll thank us later!

This is an important step, but often overlooked. If it can fit in a box it should be in a box. It will minimize damages and make loading the moving truck packing process much easier. And take it from us- if you’ve hired a moving company, they will appreciate it!
